One Way Out

by Julie Batula

Often banned as inhumane, Cockfighting or sabong (in my native tongue) is nonetheless, one of the oldest and most popular sports in the Philippines. It is a sport where two roosters fight inside a ring or rueda, the intent of which is to subdue the opponent by fatality resulting in the eventual victory of the surviving fighter with metal-blade spurs or tari. In sabong, wages are made on the outcome of the fight on virtually all matches, to which the popularity and long-lived nature of the sport is credited.

Roosters continue fighting because they cannot escape, regardless of how exhausted or injured they become. It is a routine where they are forced to fight or die, and where death is the only way out.
