Louise Far’s pick in her featured work

Louise Far's pick in her series, Off-the-Wall, Of the Four Walls

Louise Far talks about her fave photo in the series:

It simply is, about peer-led learning but what delighted me about this image is its mix of visible elements which manifests realities and notions not directly depicted in it but are suggested through visual clues such as the illustrations, the Christmas décor, the rag, the company poster and the writings on the board. Images could trigger a thousand words, thoughts, fellow images and emotions (if there are a thousand of them). In this case, it was really the sight of the word “mangkukulam” that tickled my fancy and instantly reminded me of 5 things:

  • Spot-the-object puzzles which are fun to draw circles on
  • Stereotypes which images have the power to form
  • Recognition of certain concepts in Filipino culture
  • The formation of my own lips when I produce the sound “m”
  • What I did not learn from school

Then I heard that swift, mechnical sound of the shutter, and everything, including the “mangkukulam”, was immortalized.
